KF0UUY slash AG
Aug 9, 2025 - ⧖ 2 minUntil the FCC ULS lists me as a general class license, you'll find me on the HF bands as KF0UUY/AG!
Today, I passed my general exam with the ARRL, meaning that I have opened up my path to transmit on many high frequency bands within the amateur radio spectrum!
I came home from work to a package from DX Engineering containing an Icom IC-7300. I'm so impressed by the radio - I tweaked a couple of settings and it instantly had CAT control setup with my NixOS laptop.
After throwing up a 40m EFHW into an oak tree, I was listening to all kinds of stuff on the HF bands. Many of this was new to me, and I was also trying to figure out how to operate the radio.
I was able to hear someone from France, and I also made contacts using FT-8 in New York and Quebec. I've got a lot to learn about WSJT-X, however I am very happy that I made it this far!
Lots of stuff is rolling around in my head - try this, try that...
I'm going to get myself a good handle on FT-8, and then follow it up with an attempt to make some SSB voice contacts. I only have a 25W EFHW antenna rigged up at the moment, so I will need to build something with a bit more cahones for more power.
Raise a glass to the beginning of a fun journey - I'm diving into the wild world of HF radio!
